Dress uniform

Thought I'd try out this whole Polyvore thing with a couple of looks based on dresses.
I was a huge tomboy growing up, so it seems a little strange for me to gravitate toward wearing dresses... but they're just so easy! Instead of having to find a top and bottom that can coordinate, you have the whole thing put together, and all you need to do is add accessories and shoes!

And even though I'm not a fan of this trend toward rompers, they do have some appeal for the same reason - they're a ready made outfit. Just grab and go!

For these collages I picked a couple of dresses I've been lusting over from eShakti and Coldwater Creek. Click on each picture for details.

A swing and a miss

Shirt: Old Navy
Skirt: Target
Tights: We Love Colors
Shoes: American Eagle Outfitters, via Ross
Teeny tiny necklace: gift
Watch: Target
Occasion: Alternative Certification Program training
Music: "Take Out" by The Sound Defects

I almost didn't post this outfit. I almost didn't post anything at all. I suffered a bit of a blow to my ego recently by being told that my previous outfit wasn't good enough for a certain "post what you wore" community.

I don't really have a lot right now, but I'm doing the best I can with what I have. I'd say I'm sorry if that's not good enough for you, but it would be a lie. I'm not sorry. I can't afford anything from Asos and I couldn't fit into anything from Anthropologie, so if that's the kind of thing you call "style," you're not going to get that from me until the day I get a much, much better income. The thing is, for a long time I didn't put a whole lot of effort into what I wore, so all I'm trying to do is look like I care.

Anyway, I call this outfit "a swing and a miss" because I tried to get it there, and it just didn't make it. It was very comfortable. Also, I'm pretty excited about the skirt, which is the shortest skirt I've worn since I was maybe twelve. The top just isn't doing it for me.

It actually wasn't doing it for me when I first bought it, snapping it up when Old Navy was doing one of their ridiculous clearance sales and I really just wanted something affordable and comfortable that wasn't a t-shirt - and all Old Navy plus is online, so it's not like I could try it on. I thought I'd give it another shot, hoping the skirt would dial down a bit of the frump factor, but I'm still not digging it and I think it shows way too much in the way of wrinkles and such of the skirt underneath. Should I keep trying to work with this top, or should I purge it from my closet?

A whole new town, with a whole new way

shirt: Paris Blues, from Ross
pants: Dockers, from Marshall's
watch: Target
necklace: Claire's
shoes: Xhiliration by Target, thrifted

I am currently enrolled in an alternative teacher certification program, and this is what I wore to one of my classes/seminars. Basically, because I already have a bachelor's degree, if I take some courses, do some observations and pass my content area exam (in my case, science), I can get certified to teach in public schools in Texas. The dress code is business casual so I, instead of wearing jeans and sneakers like some of my fellow wannabe-teachers, put this together.

I know that this outfit is not super-exciting but since I don't have a lot of clothes and a lot of money to buy new clothes and accessories, the early days of this blog are mostly going to be related to me wearing whatever I can wear that isn't sweatpants and a t-shirt! Also, keep in mind that it is REALLY FREAKING HOT in Texas right now, so whatever I wear has to serve the dual purpose of not making me sweat like a pig.

As I gradually increase my clothing collection, hopefully I'll be able to come up with more interesting outfits in the future... and buy a better camera, so I can take better outfit shots!

Etsy Tuesday

Lately I've been kind of obsessed with Etsy. I love the idea of buying something that was handmade, that someone put all of their heart and creative talent into, or a really cool vintage item that someone scored after possible hours and days of searching. I like to imagine these enterprising entrepreneurs scouring dusty junk shops, picking through piles of things at a thrift store, scouring estate sales until they find that one amazing item. Or the artisans sitting at their craft tables, folding and sewing, beading and cutting, gluing and soldering and enjoying every minute of it.

And then the items arrive, and I get the excitement of opening a package! Some things are prettily wrapped, like gifts. Sometimes they include bonus items, like a bookmark, a pin or even candy.

Every so often, these wonderful artists and artisans and vintage hounds team up to sell items for a good cause. This time, Etsians are helping clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

So here are a few of my favorite items from the "HelpTheGulfCoast" shop.

This beautiful hammered sterling silver cuff, by cgwhitfield.

Adorable earrings made from coffee beans, by baublesbanglesbeans.

This very cute whale clip, by marmaladecreations.

A very dapper heron, by fullfrogmoon.

The proceeds from the sale of each item will go to help the Gulf Coast recovery efforts. How sweet is that?

My arms are open wide

music: Dave Matthews Band - Lie in our Graves

The teacher I remember most from middle school was named Mrs. Jemison. She was my Language Arts teacher. I don't remember her better than my other teachers because she was nice (which she was), or because she gave us fun assignments (which she did), or because I loved to read and I liked the books we got that year (both true). I remember her because she was so stylish.

Mrs. Jemison always wore bright colors, especially red. She wore red lipstick and jangly bracelets, and my classmates and I were constantly speculating on whether or not she wore the same outfit twice. We were convinced that she didn't.

When I told a friend of mine that I wanted to be a teacher and, in the same conversation, lamented my lack of wardrobe, she told me that as a teacher I could get away with wearing ankle length jean skirts and tennis shoes every day. But who wants to do that?! Does the world really need more teachers in ugly sweaters? I don't think so.

However, I have a slight problem. Follow the jump to find out what.

Too sexy for her job

Gallery: Debrahlee Lorenzana too sexy to work at Citibank?

According to Lorenzana, who worked for a New York branch of Citigroup, she was told not to wear items of clothing such as turtleneck sweaters and pencil skirts because her figure proved too much of a distraction to her male co-workers.

Though some of the photos that have been submitted to websites are a bit more on the provocative side, the photos taken by her lawyer of her everyday work attire show a professionally-dressed lady who just so happens to have a bangin' figure.
